Glossary

Beat

A steady pulse or measure of time.

In music and music theory, the beat is the basic unit of time, the pulse. The beat is often defined as the rhythm listeners would tap their toes to when listening to a piece of music, or the numbers a musician counts while performing.

Chorus

The part of a song that repeats the same words and music.

The element of the song that repeats at least once both musically and lyrically. It is almost always of greater musical and emotional intensity than the verse. In terms of narrative, the chorus conveys the main message or theme of the song. Normally the most memorable element of the song for listeners, the chorus usually contains the hook.

Dynamics

The volume of the sound from soft to loud.

In music, dynamics normally refers to the volume of a sound or note, but can also refer to every aspect of the execution of a given piece, either stylistic (staccato, legato etc.) or functional (velocity). The term is also applied to the written or printed musical notation used to indicate dynamics. Dynamics are relative and do not refer to specific volume levels.

Pitch

How high or low the sounds are.

The frequency of a note; how high or deep it sounds. Pitches are compared as “higher” and “lower” in the sense associated with musical melodies. Pitch is a major auditory attribute of musical tones, along with duration, loudness, and timbre.

Rhythm

How short or long the sound lasts.

The aspect of music comprising all the elements (as accent, meter, and tempo) that relate to forward movement. The patterning of musical sound, as by differences in the timing, duration, or stress of consecutive notes. The element of music pertaining to time, played as a grouping of notes into accented and unaccented beats.

Tempo

How fast or slow the beat will go.

The tempo of a piece will typically be written at the start of a piece of music, and in modern Western music is usually indicated in beats per minute (BPM). This means that a particular note value (for example, a quarter note or crotchet) is specified as the beat, and that the amount of time between successive beats is a specified fraction of a minute. The greater the number of beats per minute, the smaller the amount of time between successive beats, and thus faster a piece must be played.

Verse

The verse is the part of a song that tells the story.

The verse gives listeners more insight that builds on the details of the song, and it moves the story forward. A song may have any number of verses. Typically, all verses in a song follow the same melody, which differs from that of the chorus. A verse roughly corresponds with a poetic stanza.
